Donation of Appreciated Assets
It is common for church members to hold stocks, bonds, or real estate that have appreciated in value from the time they purchase it. Upon donation, the church receives the full value of the asset, while the giver receives the full charitable deduction on the market value of the asset and aviod capital gains taxes. There are two things that are very important in this process: (1) Consult your financial advisor. (2) Give the appreciated assets themselves - as opposed to disposing of the appreciated assets and then giving the proceeds. This will help ensure that you receive the maximum tax benefit and the church receives the maximum gift.

Tax-Free Distributions From IRA's
IRA owners who are at least 70-1/2 years of age can make tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA to a tax-exempt church or charity. This provision is effective thru 2007. Please consult your tax advisor.
